½ Ton Dump Truck Conversion

I purchased the Dump Bed kit from Northern Tool & Equipment for $849. Even though the dump unit does not require modifications to the truck bed, it was a good time to replace the rusted floor.

I also built a custom tail gate with 1.5" square tubing frame covered with 20 gauge sheet medal. I used the stock tail gate restraints, but I fabricated a release/hinge assembly at top and bottom of tailgate. It lets down like a normal tailgate when you release upper hinges. Then when you close and latch the tailgate, you can release the bottom hinges and it will swing out for dumping a load. The tailgate wasn't part of the kit, but it works great.

I have hauled 40-50 loads of gravel and sand without any problems.
